Emily thought the drama in her life was finally over. After her sister’s mysterious murder, Emily and her family left Dallas, Texas, for a new start in the rural town of Beckley, West Virginia. Everything seemed perfect. She was popular in school, doing well in her classes and even got a cute new boyfriend named Maxwell Snow. But just as everything seems to be going smoothly, a new boy named Julian arrives at school. Dark and wild, Julian seems to be the complete opposite of her perfect boyfriend, Max. But for some reason, Emily can’t stop thinking about this peculiar new boy who haunts her dreams. Who is he and why is she mysteriously drawn to him? Will she finally find some answers to her sister’s murder? Get ready to learn about a completely “new” version of vampires. Suddenly, Emily’s life seems to have a lot more drama, and it has only begun.
I really enjoyed reading Angie Reed’s novel, Hybrid. I am a huge fan of vampire books and this one did not disappoint. The plot was fun and entertaining and kept me on the edge of my seat. Also, I loved how every chapter opened with a quotation from a “famous” vampire. It was a suspenseful read and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! My only concerns where that the dialogue at times sounded forced and fake and a little immature for a young adult novel. The dialogue didn’t seem real or genuine. Also, I think that the character development of the main character, Emily, could have been a little more extensive. After reading the novel, I didn’t have a good grasp of her personality, and I think that more details would have been nice. Also, I thought it was a little weird that there was basically no mention of vampires until the very end of the novel. I do believe, however, that fans of Twilight will enjoy this new series and find themselves cheering for two new teams: Team Max and Team Julian. Who will Emily choose? Read to find out!

The Reed family tries to escape memories of the death of the youngest daughter, Rose. They leave Texas and head to a small town in West Virginia. The father heads right to work at a law firm, working long hours. The mother busies herself into settling into their new house and raising three daughters, Emily and twins Caitlin and Ashley. Emily finds herself a friend in the neighbor boy Blake and soon finds herself in the popular crowd at school. She begins dating a mysterious boy, Max, and is adjusting well. A new boy in school, Julian, stirs up trouble. Julian and Max clash trying to win Emily’s affections. Emily is torn between the wonderful Max and the “bad boy” Julian.

Hybrid by Angie L. Reed is the beginning novel in a series about vampires. Hybrid gives readers the back-story in what seems to be a very interesting collection of novels. Readers only start to learn about hybrids, vampire and human mixes, in the end of the novel. The end will leave readers hanging on and wondering how it will turn out. Readers will wonder if Julian or Max will win Emily’s heart. They will also wonder about Rose’s death. Until the next novel, readers will wonder and wait.
