Interview with Angie L. Reed

I’ve got a special treat for you guys today! The Paranormal Teen Book Club interviewed Angie L. Reed, author of the great paranormal teen romance novel, “Hybrid”. Hope you enjoy it and remember to go out and get a copy!

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your book, Hybrid?

A: Hybrid is a paranormal love story with a shocking ending. Emily leaves Dallas, Texas to escape the painful memories of her sister’s death. Rose is four years old when she dies. She is snatched from a restaraunt parking lot at the hands of a strange man. He kills her and dumps her body in a ditch. Rose is buried and her family leaves Texas because they are heartbroken. After arriving in Beckley, West Virginia, Emily falls for Max. He’s perfect–or so she thinks. And then a stranger comes around with ties to the man who killed her sister.

Q: How did you come up with the idea for your story? Were you influenced by any other vampire fiction?

A: Of course I was influenced by Twilight. I decided to make my characters hybrids–half vamp and half human just like Renesmee!

Q: When researching Hybrid, I stumbled upon many people who were raving about how wonderful it was. What does it feel like to have people react in that way to your first novel?

A: It’s awesome. Flamingnet reviews–who is highly regarded–compares Hybrid to Twilight and gives Hybrid an 8 out of 10! Sales are great. I’m very pleased.

Q: One thing people may notice in this book is that there are no drugs, sex or bad language like there may be in other books on the market now. Was there a reason behind that?

A:I am a mother and an English teacher and didn’t feel like including drugs or sex was necessary for a good story. Twilight is not riddled with references either. I’m pleased I stuck to my guns. The book is scary–isn’t that enough? I am writing a novel for adults, however, about vamps and zombies and it will be slightly more adult in theme.

Q: What kind of books do you enjoy reading?

A: Everything from Shakespeare to Meyer! I just love to read!

Q: Do you have any book recommendations for teens who enjoyed your book?

A: The Forest of Hands and Teeth! Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q: The book ends on a great cliffhanger. Can you tell us anything about where the story will go in the second book?

A: Bloodling is part two. It is more scary and suspenseful than Hybrid. Hybrid is more of an introduction to the characters. Bloodling reunites Emily with Rose and brothers Max and Julian deal with the reoccurance of their evil grandfather Ursulus–the original vampire. Bloodling is also funnier–Rose–a four year old vampire–likes to eat bugs and squirrels. She’s a bit confused about her new life!

Q: Do you have a website or anywhere else where readers can learn more about you and your book?

A: www.angielreed.com. I’m also on Facebook and Myspace.

Thanks again to Angie for the great interview!

another great review for Hybrid!

Hybrid
by Angie L. Reed

Published: June 2009
Genre: Romance, Vampires
Paperback: 300 pages
Rating: 4

Inspiration: my R.I.P. challenge and Weekly Zombies (check out the latest zombie reviews and blogosphere finds)

Description from amazon.com: Just when you think you have read and seen it all, something new dawns on the horizon. Julian, Max and Emily open a new door into the unreal, a door that will mesmerize the reader with shocking unexpected twists and turns as a new generation of vampires is revealed.

My thoughts:
In-a-word(s): I am neither good, nor bad, neither angel nor devil, I am a man, I am a vampire.- Michael Romkey. I, Vampire.

Don’t be fooled by the book cover. This is a YA vampire novel. Well sorta. There’s a twist. It’s a story of half human/ half vampire creatures.

Being a YA novel the first half of the book covers all the trials and tribulations of a teen girl fitting into a new school in a small town. Fortunately, the assimilation into the new school goes well. Friends, popularity and a boyfriend come easily for the main character, Emily.

You get brief peeks into Emily’s past which provides a mystery element into the story. But for the most part, the first half of the book puts you into a false sense of security.

The second half of the book picks up with some vampir-ish action. I say “ish” because you don’t get neck biting. However, you get introduced to the whole concept of a Hybrid. This part of the story is what fascinated me.

Oh yeah, there’s also a love triangle. ;-D

Then, it ends with a doozy of cliffhanger. To me, the story has just begun and I look forward to what book 2 has to offer.

Loved the vampire quotes and references that prefaced each chapter. One in particular that was an interesting tidbit was a picture in the intro pages.

Interview of Angie Reed’s Hybrid

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Today we welcome author Angie L. Reed to My Overstuffed Bookshelf. She is the author of the paranormal vampire book, HYBRID.

Can you tell us a little bit about your book, Hybrid?

Hybrid is my first and only release. It was picked up by a small but traditional publishing company out of North Carolina. It is a paranormal thriller for teens and young adults involving humans and vampires. Hybrids are half human and half vampire and a small family of hybrids are living in West Virginia. When Emily and her broken family move from Dallas, Texas to Beckley, West Virginia, she never plans on falling for one hybrid–let alone two. But she soon finds herself falling for Max and Julian–estranged twin brothers who are half vampire and half human.

When did you decide to start writing and why?

I decided to write Hybrid after reading Stephanie Meyer’s series Twilight. I was inspired by Renesmee who is half human and half vampire.

What books do you like to read when you aren’t writing?

I love to read stories about vampires. Although I’d virtually stopped reading for pleasure for awhile, I picked up my daughter’s copy of Twilight one day and couldn’t put it down! I stopped reading for pleasure when I decided to return to college to pursue a B.A. in English and then a Master of Education. Right now, I’m working on my second undergraduate degree. I substitute teach at my daughter’s private school and most of the character’s names are students at Fort Worth Academy.

What are three things you must have when sitting down to write a book?

When I sit down to write anything–books, research papers, etc.–I must have coke and junk food like chips and candy! I especially love to have chocolate.

What do you like to do in your down time?

I don’t have a lot of downtime because I’m a wife, mother, full-time student, and writer, but when I am free, I like to shop. I’m a shopaholic!

Where can we purchase your book?

My book can be purchased online at amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, or bought at any book retailer. You can also order a copy from the publisher at www.argusbooks.com.

Do you have a blog where we can keep up with what your are writing and doing?

I have a webpage and you can reach my blog there. My address is angielreed.com. I love to hear from my fans and can be found on most social networking sites. I am having an author giveaway right now. I will be giving away a $100 Gift card and five signed copies of Hybrid on November 1, 2009. You can enter on my blog page at my web address.

Thanks so much for joining us today Angie!

Thanks for your time!

Emily thought the drama in her life was finally over. After her sister’s mysterious murder, Emily and her family left Dallas, Texas, for a new start in the rural town of Beckley, West Virginia. Everything seemed perfect. She was popular in school, doing well in her classes and even got a cute new boyfriend named Maxwell Snow. But just as everything seems to be going smoothly, a new boy named Julian arrives at school. Dark and wild, Julian seems to be the complete opposite of her perfect boyfriend, Max. But for some reason, Emily can’t stop thinking about this peculiar new boy who haunts her dreams. Who is he and why is she mysteriously drawn to him? Will she finally find some answers to her sister’s murder? Get ready to learn about a completely “new” version of vampires. Suddenly, Emily’s life seems to have a lot more drama, and it has only begun.
I really enjoyed reading Angie Reed’s novel, Hybrid. I am a huge fan of vampire books and this one did not disappoint. The plot was fun and entertaining and kept me on the edge of my seat. Also, I loved how every chapter opened with a quotation from a “famous” vampire. It was a suspenseful read and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! My only concerns where that the dialogue at times sounded forced and fake and a little immature for a young adult novel. The dialogue didn’t seem real or genuine. Also, I think that the character development of the main character, Emily, could have been a little more extensive. After reading the novel, I didn’t have a good grasp of her personality, and I think that more details would have been nice. Also, I thought it was a little weird that there was basically no mention of vampires until the very end of the novel. I do believe, however, that fans of Twilight will enjoy this new series and find themselves cheering for two new teams: Team Max and Team Julian. Who will Emily choose? Read to find out!
